Natural Rubber Ball

Play balls are great for retrieving, search games, recall training or as a special reward during training. Some dogs can even be motivated much more effectively with a ball than with a treat.
For me, a good play ball doesn’t need to be complicated. It should be durable, bounce well and be comfortable for your dog to carry.
The Right Size Matters
When choosing a ball, make sure the size is suitable for your dog.
The ball should be large enough for your dog to pick up and carry comfortably, but not so small that it can disappear completely inside their mouth. Especially for larger dogs, I would therefore choose a correspondingly larger ball.
Many models come in several sizes. So don’t simply choose whichever version happens to be cheapest – choose the size that genuinely fits your dog.
Why Natural Rubber?
For balls, I prefer smooth, slightly flexible materials such as natural rubber. They are comfortable to carry and give a little when your dog bites down on them.
For regular play and retrieving, I would generally avoid traditional tennis balls. Their rough surface, combined with dirt and sand, can act a little like sandpaper and may put more strain on the surface of the teeth with frequent use over time.
A smooth rubber ball is also usually easier to clean – especially practical if it regularly ends up in sand, dirt or water during your walks.
My Tip
The ball doesn’t need to be freely available all day.
Especially if your dog really loves it, you can use it specifically for playing or training together.
That way, it stays something special instead of simply becoming another object lying around the house.
