Advice Before Getting a Dog
A dog will hopefully be part of your life for many years. That’s why it makes sense to take an honest look at how life with a dog could realistically fit into your everyday routine before making the decision.
Perhaps you already know that you would like a dog but are still unsure what to expect. Maybe you’re deciding between a puppy and an adult dog, a rescue dog and a breeder, or perhaps you already have a particular dog in mind.
During the consultation, we look together at what fits your lifestyle, your possibilities and your expectations – and which points you may still want to consider before making a decision.
What Should We Consider Before Getting a Dog?
There is much more to think about than simply which breed you like.
We talk, for example, about how much time you realistically have available in everyday life, what your living and working situation looks like, how care and holidays could be organised, and how much time and effort training and enrichment are likely to require.
We can also realistically look at the ongoing costs of having a dog, possible veterinary expenses and the initial things you’ll need to buy.
Only after that do questions such as age, size, temperament, background and, where relevant, a particular breed come into play.
Already Have a Particular Dog in Mind?
Then we can look specifically at that dog as well.
You can show me any information, descriptions or documents you already have, and we can discuss what this particular dog may require and which questions you may still want to ask an animal shelter, foster home or breeder.
Of course, I can’t make the decision for you – but I can help you make it with as much relevant information and as realistic expectations as possible.
Even If Your Dog Won’t Be Moving In Yet
You don’t need to be just about to get a dog in order to use the consultation.
Perhaps you simply want to learn more about what it would mean to have a dog in the future. In that case, we can use the time to prepare for what your everyday life may look like later on and think together about what you can already put in place before your dog arrives.
That way, you can prepare calmly instead of having to think about everything only once the dog is already at your door.
